Horticultural Healing Program and Extension Project

The achievements of United Relief Foundation’s Horticultural Healing program have prompted a pilot extension project to serve more veterans and include reserve-duty and active-duty military.

Horticultural Healing program

Veterans transitional housing environment: United Relief Foundation’s Horticultural Healing program engages veterans in various garden-related activities that produce a host of wellbeing and wellness benefits for them.

Program Achievements

  • Acquiring knowledge about different plants and horticulture provided intellectual stimulation and a sense of mastery.
  • Building and maintaining a raised vegetable garden bed provides a sense of accomplishment and self-worth.
  • Working with soil engaged the senses and promoted a connection with nature, contributing to mental wellbeing.
  • Planting involved small movements, promoted fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Watering plants fostered a routine and a sense of responsibility, contributing to structure and performance.
  • Weeding and pruning required focus and attention, serving as mindfulness exercises to reduce stress and anxiety.
  • Harvesting fostered a sense of accomplishment and provided a tangible reward for efforts, boosting mood and self-esteem.
  • Gardening with others fostered social connections and a sense of belonging, combating feelings of isolation.

The Reason to be United in the Service of those who Served and are Serving!

17 veterans die by suicide each day, with veterans being 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide than civilians, and 11% to 23% of veterans have experienced PTSD within a given year.

According to the VA, 1,107,440 disabled veterans have a 100 percent VA disability rating, which represents 20.44% of the total number of veterans with a service-connected VA rating of 0% or higher.

The Department of Defense (DoD) listed nearly 1.29 million people as active-duty troops, and 767,238 as national guard/reserves.

89 percent of active-duty deaths by suicide were among enlisted servicemembers.

Across the active and reserve component those who died by suicide were primarily enlisted males under the age of 30. If this population is struggling with their mental health while in service, those struggles are likely to continue and get worse as they make the transition to civilian life.
