First Action, Raising Awareness
September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a time to focus on raising awareness, encouraging conversations, and reminding those who may be struggling that they are not alone.
At United Relief Foundation, we believe awareness is the first meaningful action in suicide prevention.
Raising awareness starts with the simple act of sharing information—helping others recognize the signs that someone may be struggling and creating a culture where people feel comfortable talking about emotional challenges and asking for help.
Too often, people experiencing a crisis suffer in silence. They may worry about being judged, misunderstood, or perceived as weak. For veterans and active servicemembers, the expectation to remain strong and resilient can sometimes make it especially difficult to acknowledge when they are struggling or to reach out for support.
Awareness gives us an opportunity to take action:
- Know the signs that someone may be experiencing a crisis.
- Reach out when someone seems withdrawn, overwhelmed, or not like themselves.
- Listen without judgment and give them the opportunity to be heard.
- Encourage professional support when it is needed.
- Stay connected with people who may be experiencing isolation.
- Follow up rather than assuming one conversation is enough.
- Remind those who have served that their value extends far beyond their military service.
These actions may seem simple, but they make a meaningful difference. Sometimes, it begins with a conversation, a phone call, a text, or simply letting someone know, “I’m here for you.”
If You or Someone You Know Is in Crisis
If you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts of suicide or is in emotional distress, help is available.
In the United States, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Veterans and servicemembers can also press 1 after calling 988 to connect with the Veterans Crisis Line.
If there is an immediate danger or someone has already taken action to harm themselves, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
