Recognizing and Honoring Our Military Heroes.

May is National Military Appreciation Month, a time dedicated to recognizing and honoring the sacrifices and contributions of the men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces. Established by Congress in 1999, this month-long observance ensures that the nation takes time to express gratitude to military personnel, veterans, and their families.

The Significance of National Military Appreciation Month

The United States has a long history of military service, with brave individuals stepping forward to defend the country and uphold its values. National Military Appreciation Month serves as a reminder of the dedication and resilience of service members, both past and present. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge the families who support them, as they, too, make significant sacrifices.

Throughout the month, several important military-related observances take place:

  • Loyalty Day (May 1st) – A day for Americans to reaffirm their loyalty to the country.
  • Military Spouse Appreciation Day (2nd Friday in May) – Recognizing the sacrifices and support of military spouses.
  • Armed Forces Day (3rd Saturday in May) – Honoring all active-duty service members.
  • Memorial Day (Last Monday in May) – A solemn day of remembrance for those who have died in military service.

There are many ways to participate in National Military Appreciation Month and show support for service members, both past and present:

  • Fly the Flag – Displaying the American flag is a simple yet powerful gesture of patriotism.
  • Attend Local Events – Many communities host parades, ceremonies, and other events to honor military personnel.
  • Express Gratitude – Writing letters or sending messages of appreciation to service members can make a meaningful impact.
  • Unite In Service – Be united in the service of those who served, and are serving, with a monetary or real estate donation to the United Relief Foundation.

Let’s take this opportunity to recognize and honor our military Heroes and ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.

Why National Military Appreciation Month Matters.

Military service is a cornerstone of American history, woven into the fabric of the nation’s identity. From defending freedom to aiding humanitarian efforts worldwide, service members play a vital role in safeguarding the country and its values. National Military Appreciation Month reminds us to acknowledge their resilience and the profound impact their service has on national security and global stability.

Beyond the uniformed personnel, this month also highlights the immense sacrifices made by military families. Spouses, children, and loved ones endure separations, relocations, and challenges that come with supporting a service member. Their strength and devotion deserve equal recognition.

The Reasons to be United in the Service of Those Who Served

According to DoD, about 200,000 service members transition to civilian life every year.

17 veterans die by suicide each day, and 11% to 23% of veterans have experienced PTSD within a given year.

More than 1,000,000 veterans live in poverty, and veterans comprise 10.6% of all the homeless.

Women veterans are the fastest-growing group in the homeless population.
